I am deeply saddened by reports of a bomb at a United States-Iraqi facility near Mosul in Iraq. I understand that there are numerous casualties, although the situation is still developing. Such attacks not only identify the threat to our troops and those of the coalition but highlight the barbarism of terrorists who go to sickening lengths to prevent the progress of democracy and security in Iraq. We will not be cowed by the actions of the minority, nor will our troops. We will not leave under such threats, and we will stay in Iraq as long as the Iraqis need us. We will take all necessary measures to protect our own troops.

My Lords, I thank the Minister for repeating the Statement. I declare an interest as an elected member of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. In 1997, when this Government came to power, council tax, as introduced by the Conservative administration, had been widely seen as being fair and reasonable and was...

My Lords, I spoke against this clause on Report, having been an agnostic in Committee. The whole point of Clause 2 is that it creates an equilibrium whereby Natural England must decide by itself where the right balance lies. Sustainable development is key here. I do not believe that Natural England will be cowed,...

No, I am in the middle of making a point. That way, bright children from poor backgrounds who are currently being let down would have a school with the critical mass to enable them to aspire to achieve their potential. It is not constituencies such as mine that have this...

My Lords, my only worry—I am sure this is a mere verbal worry—is that it appears in paragraph 6.1 that you get old-fashioned compensation only if it has already been calculated before 1 February, whereas the clear intention expressed in the ministry’s own memorandum is that you will get old-fashioned...
