The Government's Plan for Brexit

Proceeding contribution from Geraint Davies (Labour) in the House of Commons on Wednesday, 7 December 2016. It occurred during Opposition day on The Government's Plan for Brexit.

On the timing set out in the amendment, would the Secretary of State not accept that, given that the French election is in May and the German election is in October, nothing will be achieved in that timeframe? If we trigger in March, there will be negotiating time lost in the two-year window. Article 50 should therefore

be triggered in the autumn, in November, with time for a referendum on the exit package, so that people can decide on the final deal.
