Welfare Benefits Up-rating Bill

The hon. Member for Banff and Buchan (Dr Whiteford) addressed the fact that RPI is not a perfect indicator, but it is better than what we have. On the question of paying for our proposal, this is about priorities. If the Government limited tax relief on pension contributions to £26,000, that would give them £33 billion. If they cracked down on tax evasion and tax

avoidance, they could get more than £100 billion. It is about political choices: this Government want to target the poorest and we do not.
