Welfare Reform Bill

Proceeding contribution from Lord Freud (Conservative) in the House of Lords on Tuesday, 17 January 2012. It occurred during Debate on bills on Welfare Reform Bill.
That is an assessment based on the delays that we anticipate from this amendment, which is actually similar to the previous amendment where I used the same figure. It would have the same effect of delaying the whole process. That is the Government’s position, having worked through the implications of the amendment. I remind the House of where the Opposition have got to with their amendments. We estimate that as a result of the votes on amendments so far, over five years they have imposed £3.8 billion-worth of extra costs, and this amendment will take that figure to £5.2 billion.
