Welfare Reform Bill

Proceeding contribution from Baroness Meacher (Crossbench) in the House of Lords on Wednesday, 11 January 2012. It occurred during Debate on bills on Welfare Reform Bill.
I thank the Minister very much for his reply to the various amendments, and many Members of the House for their contributions. What we have here is an attempt to protect the dignity of a very vulnerable group of severely disabled people at a cost of £10 million, which is absolutely paltry. I refer to Amendment 46. I feel that we are being somewhat sidetracked by the intervention on the European Union. Contributory benefits of all sorts are vulnerable to this situation. I think that the whole House has made it very clear that we are behind the Government’s fight to make sure that benefits tourism is stopped. We do not want to see it happen.
