Perhaps I may clarify something. I may have misheard the noble Lord and I apologise for delaying the Committee. Did he say in his response that there might be circumstances in which somebody would not be better off, but that they should take a job anyway? I see that he did. I will quote from the right honourable Iain Duncan Smith, the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions. In his introduction to the Green Paper he referred to people of working age and stated: "““We will help them to find work and make sure work pays when they do. They in return will be expected to seek work and take work when it is available””." Was that not the contract he laid before the British people? What the Minister said appears to contradict it.
