Clause 8 does not only cover desertion in the heat of battle, because subsection (2) states:"““For the purposes of this Act a person deserts if he is absent without leave and…he intends to avoid any particular service or kind of service””."
That could lead to people who might have a real conscientious objection to a particular action, or a war such as Iraq, facing life in prison.
