Compensation Bill [HL]

What can I say? I asked the noble Baroness to give me assurances and she immediately did so. The Committee may have noticed that I refrained—at least I hope that I did—from using the word ““lists””, because I recall that the last time that I used such a word the noble Baroness noticeably recoiled. I was not really asking for lists as such, but certain key provisions that could come into immediate effect and, I think, do a great deal to protect people who need protecting. On timing, I am greatly encouraged by the noble Baroness’s mention of the month of October, because I think that she said that the regulator could be in place by then, as well as all the regulations and everything else. I am sure that I speak for the whole Committee when I say that we greatly welcome that assurance. I know that it was surrounded by the necessary qualifications, which, if the noble Baroness had not inserted them, would have been put in for her by those who have to administer the provisions. I pay tribute to the very open way in which all of the noble Baroness’s colleagues have tried to confront the problems here in as rapid a way as possible to provide the solution that we all seek. I need say nothing more except to thank the noble Baroness and I beg leave to withdraw the amendment. Amendment, by leave, withdrawn.
