Question

To ask Her Majesty’s Government, further to the Written Answers by Earl Howe on 19 October (WA 71-2), when research licence R0122 permitted the specific creation of human embryos for research purposes.

Answer

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority has advised that it first issued research licence R0122 on 21 June 2000. Activities permitted under a research licence, for the purposes of a specified research project, are set out in paragraph 3 of Schedule 2 to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990, as amended, and include bringing about the creation of embryos in vitro and keeping or using embryos.
