Debate on the Address

Proceeding contribution from David Amess (Conservative) in the House of Commons on Monday, 14 October 2019. It occurred during Queen's speech debate on Debate on the Address.

The canonisation of Cardinal Newman —it was the first of an Englishman for 50 years. The House should know that we asked the Holy Father if he would pray for a miracle so that we can deliver Brexit—[Interruption.]. When we asked him if the next canonisation

would be of a British Member of Parliament, his eyes lifted up to heaven. A number of us are feeling slightly spiritual at this rather sombre occasion, as today has been thus far.
