Economies of the UK Islands

Of course reductions in public expenditure are difficult for island communities, as they are everywhere. The real difficulty that they face is not

just the amount of money that they have to spend, but the fact that so much of it comes with strings attached and local authorities are given so little discretion over how to spend the money that they have. What island communities need more than anything else is the ability to make decisions for themselves.
