Energy

Written question asked by Caroline Flint (Labour) on Tuesday, 8 July 2014, in the House of Commons. It was due for an answer on Thursday, 3 July 2014. It was answered by Michael Fallon (Conservative) on Tuesday, 8 July 2014 on behalf of the Department of Energy and Climate Change.

Question

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change pursuant to his contribution of 18 June 2014, Official Report, column 1191, on energy prices, what the evidential basis is for his statement that there was under-investment in the UK's energy infrastructure.

Answer

The Government faces the challenge of securing up to £100 billion on investment in electricity generation and networks by the end of the decade to keep the lights on and decarbonise energy, having already attracted £45 billion since 2010. This is a higher level of investment than previously achieved, based on ONS investment data going back to 2004.
