Question

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs pursuant to the contribution of the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State on 2 November 2012, Official Report, column 538, on the Antarctic Bill, what discussions he has had with (a) the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills and (b) the National Environment Research Council to ensure that a full-time director of the British Antarctic Survey is appointed as soon as possible.

[129548]

Answer

I have not had any discussions about the appointment of a new director of the British Antarctic Survey, as Ministers have no role in this matter. However, I understand that the Natural Environment Research Council will discuss the recruitment and those aspects of the role which are associated with the Antarctic Treaty System, with my officials.
