Charter for Budget Responsibility autumn 2022 update

Written statement made by Jeremy Hunt (Conservative) on Thursday, 26 January 2023 in the House of Commons, on behalf of the Treasury.

Today I have laid before Parliament the Charter for Budget Responsibility. The Charter sets out the new fiscal framework announced at Autumn Statement 2022 and codifies the government’s commitment to responsible management of the public finances. The fiscal rules ensure that policy keeps the public finances on a sustainable path, requiring that debt falls as a share of the economy over the forecast.

The Charter was first published in draft on 17 November 2022. No further changes have been made to the Charter since it was published in draft.

A debate and vote in the House of Commons on the updated Charter will be scheduled in due course.
