Vocational Education: Qualifications

Written question asked by Baroness Garden of Frognal (Liberal Democrat) on Thursday, 20 April 2017, in the House of Lords. It was due for an answer on Wednesday, 19 April 2017. It was answered by Lord Nash (Conservative) on Thursday, 20 April 2017 on behalf of the Department for Education.

Question

To ask Her Majesty’s Government, further to the remarks by Baroness Vere of Norbiton on 27 March (HL Deb, col 400), what criteria will be used to determine, on a case by case basis, whether qualifications which do not appear on the official Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education register will be funded.

Answer

The new technical education courses will provide training for occupations that are within the scope of routes and are identified as such by their inclusion on an occupational map. As the new qualifications are introduced from 2019 onwards, we expect to remove funding for other similar qualifications. We will provide more information nearer the time about the criteria that will be used to determine whether individual qualifications will continue to attract public funding.
