Marine Environment

Written question asked by Deidre Brock (Scottish National Party) on Tuesday, 4 December 2018, in the House of Commons. It was due for an answer on Monday, 3 December 2018. It was answered by George Eustice (Conservative) on Tuesday, 4 December 2018 on behalf of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Question

To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, what estimate he has made of the at-sea and aerial capability that will be required for marine control and enforcement after the UK leaves the EU.

Answer

Control and enforcement is a devolved matter. As such, it will continue to be for each devolved administration to decide how best to control its waters, and what new arrangements may be needed.

In England, the Marine Management Organisation has assessed the levels of enforcement capacity required and the options best delivering this. An increase in the number of personnel and surveillance assets relating to fisheries protection will be in place when we leave the EU.
