Performance of the Southern railway

Commons Debate pack by Melvyn Helsey and Louise Butcher. It was first published on Monday, 6 July 2015. It was last updated on Monday, 6 July 2015.

Over recent months passengers on the Southern rail franchise have been experiencing increased delays and diversions, partly as a consequence fo infrastructure works around the franchise's main London terminal - London Bridge.

MPs have expressed deep dissatisfaction with the service provided by the train operator (Southern), with the way works have been carried out at London Bridge and unassociated track failures (the responsibility of Network Rail). In particular they are concerned that their constituents who use the service, as well as experiencing inconvenience, are not receiving adequate compensation.

This pack pulls together information on the franchise and the compensation arrangements, statistics on performance and customer satisfaction, and information about recent debates and announcements affecting Southern's services.
