Education Bill

Proceeding contribution from Lord McAvoy (Labour) in the House of Lords on Monday, 18 July 2011. It occurred during Debate on bills and Committee proceeding on Education Bill.
The noble Lord’s amendment states: "““(2) Notwithstanding subsection (1), an Academy with a religious character may require all pupils admitted to the school to take a full part in the school’s religious life””." Has he any idea how that would work in practice? Does he realize the division and animosity that that could cause by imposing the ethic on a Catholic school which now becomes 50 per cent Catholic and 50 per cent mixed variety? What right would the Catholic 50 per cent have to impose their point of view on the 50 per cent who are not Catholic? How would that be policed?
