Dairy Farming

Proceeding contribution from Stephen Phillips (Conservative) in the House of Commons on Tuesday, 7 June 2011. It occurred during Adjournment debate on Dairy Farming.
I congratulate my hon. Friend on securing this debate. Both he and the Minister know that this matter is close to my heart, and I hope that my private Member's Bill will receive his support on Friday—I am sure that it will. My hon. Friend has mentioned contracts. Does he agree that the major problem faced by the dairy industry is that retailers regard milk as a loss-leading product, and that they use their superior position in the market to drive down the price in a way that has made dairy farming unsustainable for many producers? The Government need to tackle that issue.
