Welfare Reform Bill

Proceeding contribution from Jonathan Reynolds (Labour) in the House of Commons on Wednesday, 9 March 2011. It occurred during Debate on bills on Welfare Reform Bill.
The benefits changed, so I am afraid that the hon. Gentleman is not comparing like with like. If he goes to the Library, he will see that the overwhelming rise in sickness benefits occurred in the 1980s, when take-up doubled. That is because when we went through the process of deindustrialisation the Conservative Government threw people on to the scrapheap, encouraged them to take that benefit until they retired, and did not care one bit about them. That is where he should look if he is wants to find a reason behind these figures.
