HM Revenue and Customs

Proceeding contribution from Gregg McClymont (Labour) in the House of Commons on Wednesday, 2 March 2011. It occurred during Estimates day on HM Revenue and Customs.
I thank the hon. Gentleman for that intervention. I am not able to give him a definitive answer, but I have met the senior management at Cumbernauld, who struck me as dedicated and professional, and its work force. We need to take a—I hesitate to use the word ““holistic””—panoramic view of the functions of HMRC. One can always make reforms and efficiencies, which, compartmentalised, seem to save money, but in fact, in the broadest possible context, will be a false economy and a short-term saving at the cost of a long-term sense of professionalism. I suspect that someone doing the job of tax collector needs a sense of pride in their job because at times there will be ups and downs during the course of the day.
