Police Reform and Social Responsibility Bill

I should like to use this opportunity to thank the police for performing the difficult role of policing our country while ensuring that people's civil liberties are observed. I thank the right hon. Member for Manchester, Gorton (Sir Gerald Kaufman) for mentioning Oldham and Saddleworth, because it gives me an opportunity to tell him that I was there on Saturday on Sunday. I can assure him that the circumstances that led to the by-election are at the forefront of the minds of residents. They are reflecting at some length on what action the Labour party took in the general election campaign, and I am sure that they will continue do so as they walk into the polling stations to cast their votes. The bulk of the Bill clearly deals with the elected police and crime commissioners.
