Equality Bill

Proceeding contribution from Vera Baird (Labour) in the House of Commons on Monday, 11 May 2009. It occurred during Debate on bills on Equality Bill.
I am really sorry; I have wound the hon. Lady up again. I suspect that it is Shipley, not Maidenhead, that governs the Tory party when it comes to equality. I say to all these groups: the Tories will streamline your current rights that have been hard fought for over 40 years. They will tidy them up, but they will vote against this Bill. They will say to you: "You've come far enough. Not a single step more! You've come as far as you're getting. You've had all you can have, and you'll never get further." I say to you: under Labour, this Bill is your future. I commend the Bill to the House. Question put, That the amendment be made. The House divided: Ayes 139, Noes 322.
