Welfare Reform Bill

Proceeding contribution from Tony McNulty (Labour) in the House of Commons on Tuesday, 17 March 2009. It occurred during Debate on bills on Welfare Reform Bill.
I have told my hon. Friend and others by way of answers to parliamentary questions that there are emerging data on that. It is still early days. We are looking at the data and will present our findings in the fullness of time. If the performance is not appropriate, we will deal with it. As was said, the Gregg report and others certainly stand up the notions that sanctions work and that the voluntary sector can do the job. However, it is not the case, as is intimated, that a whole set of activities at present carried out by Jobcentre Plus will not be carried out by it in future. That is the impression given, but it is not the case. For that reason we resist amendments 26 and 29. At the risk of sounding churlish and less than generous, I ask the House to resist new clause 1 and any other amendment in this group that is subsequently put to the vote. Question put, That the clause be read a Second time. The House proceeded to a Division.
