The document says that the Conservatives would"““write into law a new definition of country of origin for meat and meat products so that it means what consumers rightly assume””," which would form part of a Food Labelling Regulations (Amendment) Bill. I accept that the hon. Member for Arundel and South Downs has received legal advice. It has been published, and I have read it with interest. However, according to legal advice that I received as recently as today in order to test the ideas presented by the Conservatives, the hon. Gentleman's proposal is certain—not almost certain—to fail the legal test that the European Commission would set.
