Welfare Reform Bill

Proceeding contribution from James Purnell (Labour) in the House of Commons on Tuesday, 27 January 2009. It occurred during Debate on bills on Welfare Reform Bill.
I am happy to give that assurance. Indeed, the Gregg review covered that. Workfare is a system whereby people are punished and distanced from the labour market by removing their entitlement to work search and by their being stigmatised. We propose full-time activity, supported by looking for jobs and helping people with their skills, to ensure that they get back into work rather than being distanced from the labour market.
