Food Security

Proceeding contribution from David Curry (Conservative) in the House of Commons on Monday, 30 June 2008. It occurred during Opposition day on Food Security.
I refer to Members to my entry in the Register of Members' Interests. Does my hon. Friend accept that the Competition Commission's intervention in the price increase agreed by supermarkets for farmers some years ago has been entirely counter-productive? Supermarkets are now generally reluctant to contemplate increasing prices for farmers in case they are accused of complicity. The Food Standards Agency is having to broker an agreement with the competition authorities so that the dairy partnership can go ahead without the accusation that it is basically a price-fixing cartel.
