My hon. Friend is making a powerful point. Does he agree that the competitive advantage that the UK has always traditionally had over lots of EU countries has been eroded by this kind of legislation being inflicted upon us in the same way that it has always been inflicted upon those other countries? Not allowing people to work more than 48 hours might be well meaning, but it often works against the wishes of the employee. Sometimes they wish to work longer hours. Such legislation works against their interests.
