European Union (Amendment) Bill

Proceeding contribution from Austin Mitchell (Labour) in the House of Commons on Monday, 21 January 2008. It occurred during Debate on bills on European Union (Amendment) Bill.
It would be honest to say that we do not want a referendum because we fear that we would lose. We should admit that, because in doing so, we would be saying that the constitution and the advance of European union is a construct of the elite that must be foisted on the people, who cannot be trusted to vote on it, to have a say on it or to give their views on it, and I do not want to have to say that to the people.
