Pensions Reform

Proceeding contribution from Lord Hutton of Furness (Labour) in the House of Commons on Thursday, 25 May 2006. It occurred during Ministerial statement on Pensions Reform.
I am grateful to my hon. Friend. Again, it is very difficult to offer a precise estimate, but several hundred thousand self-employed people might choose to enrol in the NPSS. Obviously, they cannot be enrolled automatically as, by definition, there would be no employer contribution on their behalf. The estimate that I have given is not an exact science, but we are clear that self-employed people should have the right to invest pension savings in the low-cost personal accounts if they want to.
