Health Bill

Proceeding contribution from Lord Skidelsky (Crossbench) in the House of Lords on Thursday, 20 April 2006. It occurred during Debate on bills and Committee proceeding on Health Bill.
I support the amendment. My name is not down as a supporter but I completely agree with what the noble Lord has just said about the old authentic voice of liberalism and a decent compromise between the two positions. It tackles head-on the point that caused the noble Lord, Lord Clement-Jones, to shake his head repeatedly when the noble Lord, Lord Stoddart, was speaking. Does the noble Lord really assert that if Members of this House were puffing away in the Chamber they would be poisoning people in this room? You can separate people out in large houses and in smaller places without any need for ventilation in some cases, but ventilation would obviously make it easier. So I do not see the real objection to this kind of compromise, except, as the noble Lord, Lord Steel, said, some nanny-state determination to stamp out evil in some way. That is all I can say.
