Buses (Deregulation)

Proceeding contribution from Stephen Hammond (Conservative) in the House of Commons on Wednesday, 15 March 2006. It occurred during Adjournment debate on Buses (Deregulation).
: I have a minute left, so I am sorry but I will not. The paragon of virtue that London has been described as must be carefully considered before we go too far in saying that everything in London is wonderful and everything elsewhere in the world is not. The hon. Member for Manchester, Blackley said that quality bus corridors would not necessarily ensure greater reliability or quality, but that does not square with the briefing from the transport authority, which states that journey times on completed quality bus corridors are now 10 times faster in peak areas. I would have wished to go into that in more depth, but I note that my time is running out. Turning the clock back to the pre-1984 era is not the answer. The answer is to make the current system work and to improve it, and I look forward to the Minister's remarks about how the Government intend to address that.
