EU Financial Management

Proceeding contribution from Ivan Lewis (Labour) in the House of Commons on Tuesday, 7 March 2006. It occurred during Parliamentary proceeding on EU Financial Management.
Of course I agree with the statement that we ought to apply those principles to Her Majesty’s Treasury. I am not sure where the hon. Gentleman’s intervention is leading, though I am sure I will find out later on. The same principles of transparency and openness should apply. In the context of a debate such as this, it is important to state that, in this country, in the political process and the government—not this Government, but the government of the country—we are remarkably free of corruption, compared with many other countries. We parliamentarians and politicians should be proud of that. The way our democratic system works should be a cause for celebration. I give way to the hon. Member for Wellingborough (Mr. Bone) and wish him all the best in the World cup.
