In my view, the wealth of our nation is not measured by the gold stored in the vaults of the Bank of England, but by the nature of the society in which we live and the quality of our environment. Our national heritage includes not only our great public buildings, including ancient cathedrals like the one in Lichfield, but the geography of our market and historic towns and cathedral cities. However, that environment is under threat as a direct consequence of the Government's planning policies.
Although we all appreciate the need for affordable housing and good quality start-up homes, the ever-increasing densities of new residential development are beginning to destroy the very nature of our heritage.
