Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Bill

Or, indeed, the noble Lord’s digestion. The information that I have is about the European convention, as that was set out in the amendment. I cannot speak with any authority on the UN convention. As ever, I will look at it and come back to the Committee on those questions. We seek in our domestic legislation to support legal workers who come to this country appropriately and effectively. I do not believe that we will look to sign the convention as it stands because some of the issues in it are perhaps in a different place from where the UK Government are and previous governments have been. I would not want to pretend to my noble friend or the noble Lord, Lord Lester, that it is likely that we will ratify it. That does not diminish our desire to deal appropriately with the issues raised in the amendment. I know that that response will disappoint my noble friend but the Government are committed to working with her and with the organisations and departments I have mentioned to ensure that our legal workforce is looked after appropriately and its valuable contribution recognised.
