Terrorism Bill

Proceeding contribution from David Winnick (Labour) in the House of Commons on Wednesday, 9 November 2005. It occurred during Debate on bills on Terrorism Bill.
In a moment. As I have said, the police have a perfect right to ask for more time. I am not criticising the police. I do not dispute the obvious fact that they have a vital job to do in defending our country from death and destruction. Who would dispute that? But just as the police have a right to express their view, we in the House of Commons have a duty to weigh up all the factors before reaching a decision. That is our job—and, no matter how many times it has been mentioned, we should not overlook the fact that three months’ detention is the equivalent of six months’ imprisonment without remission.
