I want to add my broad support for the Bill but, first, I pay tribute to the maiden speech of the hon. Member for Ealing, Acton and Shepherd’s Bush (Mr. Slaughter), which was elegantly phrased and a good introduction to the House. Perhaps I might add that, if he could do something about the traffic congestion and endless roadworks on the way to the BBC centre at White City, much of the House—not to mention his constituents—would be permanently indebted to him. I was surprised that, as a Labour Back Bencher, he did not mention that his constituency is host to Queen’s Park Rangers football club. He will soon learn that, in the Labour party, such interests represent an important route to credibility.
