I used to be accused of having a typical foreigner's emotional attachment to the World Service, and I plead guilty to that. The latest round of more than 600 redundancies will cut into its core and undermine it, because it will not have enough journalists. As a historian, he cannot be proud to be the Foreign Secretary who will oversee the final death of the World Service.
