Written question asked by Lord Alton of Liverpool (Crossbench) on Thursday, 1 July 2010, in the House of Lords. It was answered by Earl Howe (Conservative) on Thursday, 1 July 2010.

Question

To ask Her Majesty’s Government, further to the Written Answer by Earl Howe on 15 June (WA 100), which licences issued by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority originally related to the derivation of embryonic stem cells; and how many of those licences subsequently included the use of human embryos for unrelated purposes.

Answer

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) has advised that it has issued 23 research licences where the aim of the research was to derive human embryonic stem cell lines. None of the persons responsible for these licences have applied to alter their licences to include the use of human embryos for unrelated purposes.
