Zero-grazing

Oral question asked in the House of Commons, by Robert Key (Conservative). It was answered by Jane Kennedy (Labour) on Thursday, 21 May 2009 on behalf of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Question

What assessment he has made of the effect on animal health of zero-grazing.

Answer

The permanent housing of cattle is an emerging farming system in the UK. We are funding a three-year research project with the Scottish Agricultural College to investigate the management and welfare of continuously housed dairy cows. The study will include a comparison of the health of cows in continuously housed systems with those in summer grazing systems.
