Embryology

Written question asked by Lord Alton of Liverpool (Crossbench) on Monday, 20 April 2009, in the House of Lords. It was answered by Baroness Thornton (Labour) on Monday, 20 April 2009.

Question

To ask Her Majesty's Government, further to the Written Answers by Lord Darzi of Denham on 12 May 2008 (WA 109–10) and 23 March (WA 92–93), which of the inspection reports available on the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority website describes how the corresponding centre ensures that the method used for culture of outgrowing embryos does not allow embryos to develop past 14 days or the appearance of the primitive streak.

Answer

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority has advised me that 15 of the 34 inspection reports currently published on its website discuss the time period for culturing embryos. None of the reports reveal a breach of the 14-day limit.
