PAYMENTS TO BEEF FARMERS

Early day motion tabled by primary sponsor Charles Kennedy (Liberal Democrat), on Wednesday, 2 July 1997, in the House of Commons. It is signed by 27 members in total.
That this House condemns the moves made by Her Majesty's Government to cut the compensation payments to beef farmers while at the same time imposing a maximum weight per animal, which adds insult to injury to farmers who have already suffered greatly; notes that since the introduction of the over thirty month scheme in May 1996 the compensation for slaughtered cows has been cut by a third; and believes that these changes are Treasury driven and have not been made with the well-being of British agriculture in mind.
