BST AND THE WELFARE OF DAIRY COWS

That this House congratulates Compassion in World Farming on the publication of its report The Cynical Abuse: BST - A Welfare Analysis; notes the report's conclusions that bovine somatotropin increases the incidence of painful mastitis in treated cows; further notes that BST may cause a range of other adverse effects on cow health including painful swellings at injection sites; and calls on the Government to vote against the licensing of BST for commercial use in the European Community.
